DETAILED SCHEDULE

Rules & Entry Regulations

Athletes competing in the Alabama Senior Olympics in hopes to qualify for the National Senior Olympic Games.

SPORT RULES

1. All Power Walking events will be conducted in accordance with USA Track & Field rules, except as modified herein. For a copy of these rules, please visit the USATF website www.usatf.org or contact: USA Track & Field, 132 East Washington St., Suite 800, Indianapolis, IN 46204, (317) 261-0500

2. No canes, walkers, headphones, cell phones or water bottles allowed during the event.

3. Power Walk is a monitored event in which an athlete can be disqualified. Power Walking, while very similar to Race Walking, does not have the same technical requirements.

  • One foot must be on the ground at all times.
  • Each advancing foot strike must land on the heel and when the foot leaves the ground it must push off through the toe.
  • Your knee may be straightened or bent at heel strike.
  • An athlete is disqualified when three separate judges determine the athlete is in violation of the definition of Power Walking.
  • Any violation in the last 100 meters, as determined by a single judge, results in immediate disqualification.

ENTRY REGULATIONS

1. Anyone age 50+ by December 31, 2026.

2. Age division is determined by one’s age as of December 31, 2026.

3. Athletes may compete in both events.

Medals & NSGA Qualifying

Athletes competing in the Alabama Senior Olympics in hopes to qualify for the National Senior Olympic Games.

ASO MEDALS

Medals will be awarded for 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place for each style within each age division.

NSGA QUALIFYING

Power Walk will be classified as an “OPEN” sport. Athletes do not need to qualify at a 2026 state qualifier.

DOUBLE MEDALING/QUALIFYING

The Alabama Senior Olympics (ASO) is an open state and welcomes out-of-state participants. Out-of-state athletes are eligible to medal and to qualify for the National Senior Games; however, they do not take a qualifying position or medal away from an Alabama resident.

If an out-of-state participant places in the top three of their division, they will receive the medal earned and any qualifying position in accordance with NSGA rules for each sport. The ASO will then award medals to the top three Alabama athletes and qualify Alabama residents according to NSGA qualifying rules for each sport (see Rule H).
